APOS Therapy

Apos Therapy is a rehabilitation and exercise program designed to treat various musculoskeletal conditions, primarily focusing on lower limb issues such as knee and hip pain. It was developed by Dr. Avi Elbaz, an Israeli physical therapist. The therapy involves the use of a specially designed shoe device known as the AposSystem, which consists of adjustable pods placed beneath the patient’s feet.

The process for APOS therapy is:

Assessment: A trained therapist assesses the patient’s gait (the way they walk) and identifies any abnormal patterns or biomechanical issues that may be contributing to their pain or discomfort.

Customization: Based on the assessment, the therapist customizes the AposSystem by placing the pods in specific locations under the patient’s feet. These adjustments are intended to alter the distribution of weight and forces during walking.

Home exercises: Patients are then instructed to wear the AposSystem for a specified duration each day while going about their regular activities, such as walking. The system is designed to create a controlled instability that stimulates muscles and joints, encouraging a more natural and balanced gait.

Regular follow-up: Patients typically have periodic follow-up sessions with their therapist to adjust the AposSystem and monitor progress. Adjustments are made based on the patient’s response and any changes in their condition.

Apos Therapy is used as a non-invasive, conservative approach to address issues like osteoarthritis, knee pain, hip pain, and other lower limb conditions. The therapy aims to reduce pain, improve function, and enhance mobility through gradual changes in gait and muscle activity. It is not a replacement for surgery or other medical interventions but is used as a complementary approach in many cases.
