Abebe Bikila was an Ethiopian long-distance runner who is best known for his remarkable achievement at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. He made history by becoming the first African to win an Olympic gold medal in the marathon.
Abebe Bikila competed in the marathon event barefoot, a decision made due to discomfort from the ill-fitting running shoes he was provided with. Despite this unconventional choice, he went on to win the marathon with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 16 seconds, setting a new world record in the process. This historic victory not only made him a global sports icon but also brought significant attention to Ethiopian and African athletics.
Abebe Bikila continued to compete in subsequent Olympic Games and other international competitions, achieving further success in his running career. However, he faced challenges and injuries later in life. Unfortunately, he was paralyzed in a car accident in 1969, which left him unable to walk. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 41 in 1973.
